Greater Fringed Gentian (Gentianopsis crinita) - Extremely rare in the Southern Appalachians, and requires soil with specific chemical content

    

 

Showy gentian (Gentiana decora) - Prefers mountain areas in Blue Ridge and Smokey Mountains

 

 

Closed gentian (Gentiana clausa var. latidens) - Found along the Blue Ridge Parkway

 

 

Stiff gentian (Gentianella quinquefolia) - this specimen found in the Great Smokies

 

 

Possibly Elliott’s gentian (Gentiana catesbaei) - fairly rare

 


 

Soapwort gentian (Gentiana saponaria) - found in many locations in the Southern Appalachians and also farther south

 

 

Striped gentian (Gentiana villosa) - found in many locations in Southern Appalachians seems to prefer piney woods areas

 

 

Sandhills gentian (Gentiana autumnalis) - found in the sandhills areas of North and South Carolina
 



 

Linear leaved gentian (Gentiana linearis) - Very rare in Southern Appalachians found in only one location in mountains of Tennessee. The pictured specimen has past the blooming stage.
